I think that hypothetically had Len and Reggie lived the Celticsd never would have gone through several bad years starting in 1993, the year Reggie Lewis died and the end of the Bird, Parish, McHale era. By 1993 all three had left Boston.
So they were in for a rebuilding period. But had Len Bias lived they could have built around him, and with Reggie Lewis already an established star on the Celtics they certainkly would have been as bad. I’m not sure about title contending, but they sure wouldn’t have been lottery bound every year from 1993 until 2001.
There’s a lot of things that would have been different if Lenny hadn’t died. The Celtics would have been much better in the 90’s. Also Michael Jordan would not have been all that. In college Lenny was better than Michael, had a better shot, had better jump, had better everything.
I think everyone in the 90’s would have been wearing Air-Bias and not Air-Jordan.
Not to go into it too much, but the Celtics would have continued to be an outstanding team during the 90s had Bias and Reggie Lewis lived (and avoided serious injuries).
As a Laker fan, it was positively scary when the defending champion 1986 Celtics, who imo was the best one-year team of the 80s (with a front line of Parrish, McHale and Bird, and even a healthy (that year) Bill Walton) got Bias in the draft. I said, it’s all over, they’re gonna win it again. And had Bias lived, they probably would have won it again, even though Walton was injured in ‘87 and was ineffective during the playoffs.
It’s very possible that Bias’ death may have cost the Celtics the “team of the 80s” mantle. Of course, that’s nothing compared to the loss of life for this guy and what that meant to his family (Bias, 22 when he died, also had a brother who was killed in a shooting at the age of 20 a few years later)
Hard to say what a Celtics/Bulls rivalry would have been like in the early-mid 90s with Bias in the picture. His death certainly changed the course of NBA history, but we’ll never know for sure just how much. That dude was a true beast.
Lewis died in 1993 at the age of 27. Wow.
Yeah, those two deaths were way too much for the Celtics to overcome, and it took 15 years to recover.
It’s a shame in both cases. Bias died of stupidity while Lewis had a bad heart condition.
Lewis is the only Celtic to have his number retired while never winning a championship. (one other player had his number retired without winning a title with the Celtics, but he did win a title with another team).
If is they ever could then but
