Nancy Drew: Ransom of the Seven Ships

RANSOM OF THE SEVEN SHIPS IS SO FAR THE BEST NANCY DREW GAME IVE PLAYED IM ABOUT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GAME I WOULD SAY, AND IT IS FUN! AT THE VERY BEGINING YOU GET LIKE 4 OR 5 TASKS TO DO BUT THE GOOD THING IS THERE NOT TO HARD BUT NOT TO EASY EITHER, SO FAR IN THE GAME ITS BEEN THE BEST ONE YET!

I assume this is a five star game, as my daughter has loved the others. I made the mistake of directly downloading it from HER Interactive, for 19.99, for quicker access. Couldn’t get it to work, and am waiting for e-mail response. So, unless you understand a lot of computer terminlogy and wonder whether WINRar is okay, instead of WinZIP, order the CD and wait a few days.

I just got the game today and I am having a blast. The difficulty of the puzzles seems just right–not too hard, but not too easy. I love the graphics!!! I get so tired some times of gloomy, dark game settings. This one is bright ad sunny. Some of the activities are laugh out loud funny–like climbing the cliff. Well done HER Interactive–more like this please!!!!!

Hey there! Thanks for reading my review of Ransom of the Seven Ships! Here is a completely spoiler free breakdown on my thoughts of this very fun game.
Beginning:
While this game starts off fairly slow, stick with it because it definitely picks up as you move along and uncover deeper mysteries. I will admit that I thought the beginning was a little boring, but as I continued on intrepidly, it got better and better.
Setting and mood:
The overall atmosphere of the game was pleasant. It wasn’t particularly exciting or thrilling, but I did enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. This is definitely a light-hearted game, and didn’t contain any spooky or scary elements.
Plot:
The plot of this game is an interesting one. Though not totally unique (it reminded me of The Final Scene in some ways), it was still enjoyable. One thing that I especially loved was that it involved a historical character (though fictional) like some of the older games (Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, The Secret of Shadow Ranch, and The Curse of Blackmoor Manor.) That’s something I’ve missed in the past few games, so having this element back was neat.
Characters:
Unlike most games, this game contained very few characters. At first this bothered me, because the game felt “empty”, but in thinking about it as I went on in the game, it was realistic. If someone was on a desert island, they wouldn’t be surrounded by people. So while I did miss interacting with lots of people, I did appreciate the realistic atmosphere that Her Interactive created.
Animals:
While the game may be lacking in characters, it more than makes up with it with animals. Being the huge animal lover that I am, I loved this aspect of the game.
The graphics:
The graphics in this game were nice, though I feel they were a bit cheaper than in the past couple of games, and even seemed a bit fuzzier than some of the earlier games like Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake. They weren’t of poor quality, they just didn’t seem quite as crisp and detailed as in the past games. Not a big deal, but I’m hoping the next game has graphics that are a little more cleaned up.
The puzzles, games, and activities:
The puzzles in this game were fantastic! They were difficult in a good way, but not impossible to solve. I will admit there were a few that were a bit frustrating, but they weren’t totally maddening. Two of the puzzles in this game especially stand out to me, and are in my opinion, two of the most fun puzzles Her Interactive has done.
The activities were creative and loads of fun. I won’t go into too much detail, but there were a few activities that I thought would be similar to activities in previous games, but Her Interactive did an excellent job of making this tasks different.
Length:
This game was nice and long! I didn’t keep track of the hours I played because I kept getting interrupted while playing, but I’d say it was comparable to Phantom of Venice or The Haunting of Castle Malloy in terms of length. In fact, it outlived my chocolate supply! (I had to take a break to traipse down to the store to restock my stash. LOL!)
Ending:
Without going into any details, this game had the best ending by far. One word: awesome!
Other:
The music in this game wasn’t super memorable, but it was nice and added a nice pirate-y feel to the game.
One thing that got a bit annoying was the amount of third person play in this game. It was fine in The Haunting of Castle Malloy, but it started to bug me in this game because so much of the game is spent in third person. I really missed exploring and doing other activities in first person character, and I hope Her Interactive sticks with the first person perspective in future games.
Overall…
…this is a great game! While it’s not perfect, I still enjoyed it immensely and is one I’m going to enjoy replaying. Like I mentioned in the beginning of my review, it starts off very slow and you may find it a bit boring. But don’t give up! I promise you, finishing is well worth it.
Happy sleuthing! I hope you enjoy the game!

If you want to get a feel for the game, look at a walkthrough on YouTube and you will see how tedious it is — especially the third person aspect. Even the supposed “surprise” ending is a shoulder shrugger.
Also, read the Her Interactive message board — the game is receiving 99 percent unfavorable reviews. I have never seen a HI game tank this badly before…
