I read technical support information on the Trend website prior to installing this software. I was particularly interested in using this software on machines with dual boot capabilities and partitions. The tech support states that you cannot use this software on two os X partitions on one machine unless you purchase two copies of this software. I currently have 2 partitions on my machine and am unable to install my single copy of this software on both. Since I am unsure what would happen if I installed this software on only one partition and I cannot find this information on Trend’s tech support site I have decided not to install this software on my machine.

I’ve learned over the years from college sports, Vietnam and the corporate world that over-confidence can be a death sentence. On one hand I feel safe and secure using a Mac Airport Extreme Router, Time Machine and a fast Mac. On the other hand, there’s always a first time. Granted, there are very few if any viruses out there for OSX 10.5 and above today. However, the skyrocketing popularity of Macs combined with many user’s arrogance and false sense of security will eventually lead some whiz kid to write a program that will create havoc with Macs. No worries today. What about tomorrow? Smart Surfing for Mac installed in 2 minutes. Downloading the updates took 10 minutes. I experienced no perceivable hit on performance on my iMac 24″ desktop. The program runs behind the curtain. It is transparent. No problems at all so far. I’ve carried some insurance for 40 years and have never needed it. That’s a fortune wasted. $22.99 for a little Internet insurance seems quite cheap in comparison. Evaluating Smart Surfing for Mac is kind of like grading the benefit of all the vitamins and health food I consume. How do I know they are working? I don’t. Even so, I’d rather take something now I don’t need than learn later that if I had taken it much suffering could have been avoided. Older generations wear both belt and suspenders while many youngsters wear their pants below there knees. Protect whatever you feel is important.

So, the debate remains, do Macs need anti-virus/personal-data protection software? I’ve had my Apple MacBook Pro MC118LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop for over a year now, and since it’s pimped out with all the necessary external mac(cessories) that all true mac geeks must have: the keyboard protector, the protective clear casing, the screen protector, when I saw this bit of software up for grabs, I thought, “Why not? I protect the outside, now I can protect the inside, and maybe even my own identity!”.
The Trend Micro Smart Surfing Software purports not only to protect you while you surf online, but it also scans your mac for any file corruptions or viruses. Happily, after having my mac for a year “unprotected”, the hour-long scan of every file on my mac turned up that there was nothing wrong! This is much more of a testament to macs and not as much to the software. However, its ease of installation is not to be overlooked, and I didn’t even have to look at the easy installation fold-out card! The scan, though long, is thorough and doesn’t prevent you from using your mac as you normally would as you can set the scan to run in the background and I had no application lag while the scan was going on. Also, even when not set to scan the hard-disk, it runs in the background so modestly with an icon at the top with all my other menulets, just to remind me that it has my back and still cares. And, if I scroll over it for just a second, it gives me assurance that I’m still the only girl it has eyes for with the line “Trend Smart surfing now protects you”. But, with all that brawn protecting me, you might think that it slows down my start-up and performance, but I am happy to say that it does no such thing.
Oh how safe I feel! Still, the question remains, should you, dear reader run out and cop this disk for your mac to be secure, I’d say…
not so much, for right now, that is. We’re always hearing about people beginning to make headway in creating mac bugs, but we haven’t been hit with anything big as yet have we? So I’ve given it four stars because while it may not have actually “done” anything, it is well made and I’m confident that if it needed to, it could do something, like the bodyguard you have “just in case”. Hey, if you can afford it, why not? However, as I said before, I’d been using my mac unprotected pretty heavily for over a year and have had no issues yet, so I’d be a hypocrite to hail this product as a necessity when I consider it as no more than another ad-on to brag to my mac geek buddies about during AV Club

Like many of the other reviewers, I have been thankful that my Mac has been virus-free… But ya never know. Just because Apple has a smaller market share, it doesn’t mean that programs won’t be written to zap Macs. Still. it’s hard to judge the effectiveness of this software, since there aren’t any malicious viruses aimed at Macs (that I know of). The program installs easily, runs well and says that everything is okay. So far so good. The more active aspects of this product are the parental control features, which seem pretty handy. But again, since my kid is pretty young and is only allowed near the computer in very controlled circumstances, its hard to gauge the effectiveness of this feature as well, at least in a real-world setting. I think it will come it handy, though! All in all, this seems like a good product. It may seem like overkill, but then again, where online safety and privacy are concerned, maybe you can’t be too safe, after all. (Joe)
